Well then drink something! These are the protective words on the wall and menu of the Terbotz restaurant with which the poet Pajo Kanižaj made it wonderfully clear how one should enjoy a fine drop of wine and even better food.

Situated in the hilly region of Međimurje, in a beautifully restored building more than two centuries old, where glamour, peace, a real open fireplace and terrace with a view of the Jakopić family vineyard whose wines you will enjoy while you eat await you.

To begin with the more than courteous staff lead you through the entire building so that you can admire the tasting room and suggest that you first try the local sparkling wine made from the Pušipel sort. The great advantage of Terbotz, whose name is drawn from the Hungarian aristocrats, is that with every dish they offer a wine that will ideally accompany it. They procure all the wild game and other ingredients solely from the surroundings.

The cured meat and cheese platters open the menu which is full of seasonal and other specialities of the region such as meat from tiblica (wooden barrel), taškica (pastry pouches) filled with morsels or wild garlic soup. For a starter they also serve goose pâté, and there is also the unmissable thick creamy soup with homemade cream and an abundance of meat. It comes with two types of homemade bread, so if you are lovers of cumin…

Many of the dishes are based on nettles, millet and generally everything that a look through the window will give you. One of these specialities is veal steak with green peppers along with young nettle fritters, as well as the wonderfully designed plate with duck breasts with homemade mlinci pasta and baby carrots wrapped in bacon. The ideally roasted meat with a glaze of dandelion honey is superbly accompanied by the local Jakopić Sauvignon, fresh, and serious at the same time.

For dessert there followed a whole range of Međimurje specialities luckily – the unmissable gibanica (cheese pie), štrukli pastry and pumpkin ice cream, but the “play of the day” are the strawberry filled pastry pouches. The local ravioli of ideal soft pastry with aromatic and fragrant local strawberries delights everyone at the table, from the youngest to the eldest.

Pleasant, with the crackling of the fire and view of the terrace in the beautiful, untouched nature, all of this is the perfect reason that you visit Terbotz, near Sveti Martin and Štrigova, at least once. Međimurje is wonderful!
