Batelina, which is located in Banjoli and halfway in between Pula and Medulin, has been proclaimed as the best restaurant in the region and Croatia on more than one occasion. This is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most striking culinary tales ever written in Croatia. This small fishing tavern offers a menu based on daily catch. It has transformed from a modest house into an indispensible stopover for all fish and seafood enthusiasts from Croatia and the region alike.

It’s best that you are aware from the very first moment that you should let yourself be guided by the loquacious and entertaining staff because the menu is just here for the sake of the form. If there bora was blowing during the previous evening and on that particular morning, then the menu will differ from the menu when fishing is more successful. That’s why you should relax and enjoy the things that Batelina is most famous for - creative preparing, combining and arranging ingredients just brought in from the sea.

Once you get local wine (Franz Arman) and homemade loaves of bread, it’s high time you took the plunge and dived into the sea fairy tale and got a whole new appreciation of the fish world. The main course won’t matter as much when you see the platter containing delicacies you’ve already had a chance to try. They are marinated and salted anchovies, sardines in savur (traditional Dalmatian marinade) or shark carpaccio, but you definitely haven’t tried shark liver or conger pâté. Conger pâté is a dish that should be protected and sent off to aliens in a pod so as to make them less warlike. This dish is tender and smooth perfection whose whiteness, texture and flavour can be likened to eating sea chocolate. It’s just surreal.

Every dish will be accompanied with a dash of salad, marinated onion, jam and this brave new world of colours, scents and flavours will definitely get your undivided attention. Broth from several kinds of fish, tagliatelle and risottos often make it to the list, but the Kvarner shrimp is slowly but surely becoming a legend. Be sure to try out pasta with dried flatfish roe because it’s something you couldn’t have imagined in your wildest dreams. At the end we got a wide selection of cakes. No, they didn’t come from the sea, but they were fabulous...

You have to make a reservation for Batelina and they don’t take credit cards. But who knows, while you’re having dinner you might bump into David Skoko, the owner’s son and famous chef. Heartily recommended, from the sea with love!
