In the very center of Zagreb, on a small street where only a block of buildings separates it from Ban Josip Jelačić Square, is a comfortable, attractive and modern establishment understandably named – Pod Zidom (Under the Wall). After opening as a wine bar in 2014, owner Borna Janeš wisely decided a year later to expand into a restaurant. Along with Chef Goran Radosavljević, he began to attract an urban crowd that wanted to enjoy the cuisine of a bistro. The guiding principle – domestic ingredients from local producers prepared according to the latest global trends.

Of course, there is an a la carte, seasonal menu that follows the changes in the daily rhythm of the city just a few steps from the Dolac market. Pod Zidom keeps a high quality wine list with more than 85 labels and it also features a cocktail with the house champagne.

Every dish is made from scratch, none of the sauces are bought, and everything starts from the moment that you order. So they proudly open the autumn menu with a soup of roasted pumpkin, steak tartare, tagliatelle for seafood risotto. Since even the baked products come from the basement of the restaurant, you can really say that you are in a small food factory. And you certainly should come for the theme dinners when the leading personalities of gastronomy and oenology (Janković, Batič, and others) come here.

Since we wanted only something fresh and seasonal, we were served a wonderful buncek (ham hock) with palenta and sauerkraut, strained vegetables and a frothy horseradish sauce. All of it was layered in the form of some kind of cremeschnitte, there is no way not to photograph it or not to enjoy it. The menu also includes ribs, beef tail, and, of course, you also have to try the specialty, tartare of beef heart. Seafood includes filets of a variety of white fish and a special octopus with fennel chips and a reduced cream of black olives, "Pod Zidom black cuvée." The tuna tartare accompanied with a Petrač Karizma is absolutely perfect. The house wine blends are specially prepared by Krauthaker, so you will enjoy them for a long time.

Desserts are made on the spot, so chocolate lovers will, of course, find something tasty. A quiet street, in the very center of town, ideal for a quick bite or for staying late into the night, a modern place to which you will want to return
