If you get a chance to visit the stunning city of Dubrovnik, it would be great if you could check out its hinterland, the vast and fertile Konavle field which has been feeding the world’s most beautiful city for centuries. On one of its green hills in the town of Lovorno you’ll find agricultural tourism Kameni Dvori which has been running since 2010. It started off as an accommodation object, but today it has a restaurant and cooking school as well. Now it contains a beautiful compound of houses, swimming pools, orchards and vegetable patches which is ideal for a perfect vacation accompanied with fantastic home cooking.

Kameni Dvori is a family business where everyone is in charge of a particular segment from obtaining local ingredients to preparing food. Tourists who have never seen the wilderness definitely get the biggest kick out of everything. For them, picking fresh fruit and vegetables, collecting hens’ eggs, milking the goats and getting away from everyday hustle and bustle is akin to achieving a zen state of mind.

Everything is based on home-grown seasonal food, everything is picked just before it’s cooked and guests are taken to the garden where they can choose what kind of salad they want. Meat dishes are somewhat more prevalent than fish ones, but vegetables are aplenty because that’s a trademark at Kameni Dvori. To get things going, you’ll be welcomed with liqueurs, wine and olive oil. Merlot and Laurus (Malvasia and Trebiano) are fresh surprises that will enable you to get a perfect impression of the grape from the vineyards you get to see from the terrace.

After having picked your scallion, cabbage, collards or fresh lettuce, the fire in the fireplace is crackling, the soup of the day has been heated, then there’s nothing else to do but to choose whether you’d like to have Lovorno skewers, fresh fish from the sea which is just a few kilometres away or anything that comes to your mind. The meat and fish are local so seasonality and freshness take precedence over the menu’s size and number of dishes. Be sure to try out the homemade charcuterie and cheeses.
The desserts are really something else. You can’t even have imagined most of them, let alone tried them. Mantala is a dessert made from must, walnuts, flour, cinnamon and cloves. It’s a fabulous traditional Konavle cake which has almost faded into oblivion. Then you have the quince cotognata, figs stuffed with walnuts, carob cake... An excellent choice that works great when combined with loquat, sage and carob liqueurs...

Kameni Dvori is an excellent choice if you’re in the mood for top home cooking and specialties of Konavle. Walks, cycling, team building, children’s playgrounds. You’re in for all of that with these charming hosts that will go to great lengths to make your stay an all-round experience, and not just a “regular” meal. Konavle is breath-taking so don’t miss out on this gem. You’re bound to come back over and over again.
