Ethno houses Plitvice Selo

At two hour drive from Zagreb and at almost the same distance from Zadar, an outstanding surprise expects you. Having enjoyed the road through a dense forest, when you think that you have strayed, a village like from Hobbit suddenly emerges in front of you. Stand and admire: all around you are trees, small houses, stairs and bridges, just like on near Plitvice Lakes, one of the most beautiful pearls of Croatia – to which you have only a few minutes of light walk.

The restaurant is a part of the Ethno houses Plitvice Selo complex, in the centre of which there is a wooden house with antique elements that just leaves you breathless, just like the first thing that comes to the table – hot, soft, crispy bread in two combinations, made of brown and white flour. We immediately fell in love in the mascot of the restaurant, a large green parrot who is calm, cheerful, gentle, and simply – an absolute hit.

The Plitvice Restaurant operates in such a way that during the day the offer of the food is intended mainly for tourists passing by, and thus it is based on fast salads, plates and burgers. The real experience begins here in the afternoon and evening, when the time comes for the thing they are best known by – dish under the bell. The traditional Croatian dish of vegetables and veal, lamb or octopus meat, which is prepared in a closed pan covered with hot coal. It must be ordered in advance, and it is great that in this case, the preparation is fully transparent, or if you prefer, you can watch the chef from your chair.

As a starter, we took Ethno plate with the domestic cream cheese basa and other cheeses from the nearby Saborsko, prosciutto and homemade game sausage with delicious marinated pickled garlic. The owner is a native of Zadar but beside the local households, a lot of food comes from his Dalmatia. As for the wines, the most common are those from Slavonia and Istria, and the staff recommended to us the Volarević pošip 2018 as the appetizer. Premium wine and really good cheese for a tasty start of the meal.

Jazz from the speakers and complete silence, beautiful wooden holiday homes around you, peace and tranquillity. Ideal for rest after a walk through the National Park. Game goulash, which was recommended to us as the main course, is prepared for a long time and in a precise manner of three types of meat – pork, deer and wild boar. It is sweet, compact, resembles pašticada (stewed beef dish) and matches well home-made gnocchi. It is served with homemade grilled pepper and Agrolaguna Cabernet 2017. In the winter, the selection of meals in the Ethno House is larger, and the menu includes cabbage, sarma (cabbage and meat rolls), pašticada or buncek (ham cock), and nowadays they also serve local trout, steaks, burgers and an ethno pan – beef steak with potato and vegetables.

At the end, we could choose between the chocolate cake, apple strudel, Ferrero cake, chocolate mousse with cherries and cherries strudel. We chose the last one and enjoyed until the last crumb, then, saying goodbye to the parrot we walked toward the turquoise Korana River. The central part of Croatia is like an unopened book, full of smells and tastes, and it certainly deserves to get its chance.
