High above the rooftops of this legendary city, overlooking numerous scenes from Game of Thrones episodes and thousands more wonderful memories and stories, on top of a beautifully restored building turned into hotel Stari grad is where you’ll find restaurant Above 5. Having managed to climb quite a few stairs in a narrow corridor, you’ll get a glimpse of the most stunning spectacle in the whole world and you just have to be filled with joy. The small terrace with just about twenty seats gently becomes Dubrovnik as cream on a cake and you’re ready to eat something that’ll only further accentuate the memory of this moment.

Given that it’s actually a hotel, Above 5 is a restaurant offering all kinds of interesting breakfasts to start things off. From freshly baked brioche, fresh seasonal fruit, salmon with avocado and several kinds of eggs, this is an ideal way to get ready for conquering the city walls a bit later on or roaming the sights of Dubrovnik.

The menu is changed on a daily basis so you have five starters, five main courses and four desserts to choose from when you decide to have lunch. It’s best to start with something local so you have the Dalmatian pogača prepared specially by head chef Toni Tralić. This is a modern rendition of the adored specialty stemming from the island of Vis. Homemade dough, tomato confit, garlic cream, oil with parsley and caramelised onion will make you close your eyes and think you’re on a somewhere on a boat while being bobbed by the waves. Aside from that, you have prawns with chilli sauce, steak Tartare and beefsteak tagliata. This spectacular pogača was served with the recommended Korčula white wine Pošip Posh 2015 St. Hills. A highly recommended tender, delicate and delicious combination.

When it comes to main courses, they range from the not at all classic burger to Rubija Gallega aged meat featured in most of the dishes thereby giving them that special feel. Sea bass, which is served smoked as the appetizer, is now served as a fried fillet with celery cream, baby spinach and pine nuts, but the Bolognese sauce is definitely the play of the day. Yes, you may think it doesn’t make much sense to eat that simple a dish in a place and atmosphere like this, but you’re greatly mistaken. Perfectly hard homemade pasta is full of flavours and aromas of meat aged in a piquant sauce. It’s served with the strong yet excellently contained Syris Volarević from Pelješac.

When it comes to the wine list, you have champagnes and sparkling wines, wines from Plešivica, Slavonia, Pag and the immediate surroundings, as well as a lot of foreign labels. There are about thirty labels made by some of the best wineries, but the emphasis is placed on Miloš and Meneghetti. An excellent crowd, we have to be frank.

Come dessert time and you have the house specialties such as chocolate and coffee cake, the legendary pavlova, apple and basil cake and the lemon, raspberry and chocolate sponge cake. Fresh and bubbly much like an impression that stays with you for a lifetime because it’s not that often that you get a chance to dine above the rooftops of magnificent Dubrovnik. Small, delicious meals with sips of world-class wines and a view that’ll soothe your soul, Above 5 is an experience that you’ll always cherish in your memory. Marvellous.
