Winery Kozlović

The winery Kozlović dates back to 1904 and it hasn’t changed its location ever since. The winery is located in Momjan (northwestern Istria), opposite a medieval castle and Argilla stream and it’s surrounded by vineyards as far the eye can see. Antonella and Franco are the fourth generation of winemakers in the family. The state-of-the-art winery and a cellar occupy three floors and have a total area of 2200 square metres and constitute the most modern winery in Istria. It was designed by Fabrika from Pula and they used steel, concrete, wood and glass as material. Thanks to how the exterior rocks were utilised, these materials blend perfectly with the surrounding landscape, which is the reason why you’ll barely notice the winery from afar. The winery merges with the landscape reflecting the colours of the vineyard and soil. And this is how it functions because it uses the natural inclination during the winemaking process, whereas the side walls are covered in Mediterranean vegetation giving a natural cooling effect.

Santa Lucia malvasia and Santa Lucia Noir stand out as premium labels produced by winery Kozlović. These wines are made from grapes harvested in the best vineyard. The eponymous vineyard has a contiguous area of 20 hectares. At the renowned wine competition The Library Collection held in London in 2011, Santa Lucia malvasia 2001 was awarded as the world’s best white wine over 10 years old. Magazin Decanter, the most important consumer wine publication, gave the 2012 Teran a whopping 90+ points and says that tasting this wine is an absolute must.

In April 2016 chefs from Jeunes Restaurateurs Croatia and winery Kozlović created the deluxe and exclusive JRE Malvasia which comes in 2160 bottles and is available only in JRE restaurants. Each bottle comes with a hand-signed and numbered wine certificate thereby detailing this joint effort and the wine itself, including the winemaking process and background information on the vineyard.

If you’re interested into local types of grape and getting to know Istria as a historical, culinary and cultural destination, we suggest you take the Taste Istria programme where, in addition to malvasia, muscatel and teran, you’ll get a chance to try olive oils and Istrian rakia. If you’re in need of a romantic getaway, there’s a table for two in the Mediterranean garden on the top of the winery. Should you opt for this option, you’re bound to have an evening you won’t forget. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, we recommend Back to nature, which is a walking tour of the Santa Lucia vineyard with a map and a refreshment waiting for you in the cool shade.

The Kozlović family takes great pride in local types of grape. Malvasia dominates and it makes up 60 per cent of the total production, the aromatic Muscat Momiano makes up 20 per cent of the production, whereas Muscat Rosa, Pinot noir and teran comprise the rest.
Today the winery Kozlović produces over 200 000 bottles of wine a year and all of the vineyards are cultivated applying sustainable methods.

Muscat Momiano was given a protected designation of origin (PDO) label in 2015 which makes it true stand-out.

As a worldwide recognition of quality, winery Kozlović is one of the world’s 66 wineries and the only one from Croatia chosen to be listed in the book The Greatest Wine Cellars of the World – Sommelier Heaven published by Braun Publishing in September 2015. The wineries were selected by Paolo Basso himself, who received an award as the world’s best sommelier in 2013 in Tokyo.
