Sontacchi Winery

“It is easy to come to Kutjevo, but it is difficut to get out...” – these are the words with which the members of Sontacchi family welcome you at the entrance of their tasting room and cellar, holding a bottle of their best-known wine, Kitokret.

Kitokret was once produced as a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Portugizac and Zweigelt, the ratios of which depended on the viticultural year, which is why the unusual and provocatively designed label features “cuvée” even though Sontacchi Kitokret is actually a top-quality monovarietal wine made of Cabernet Franc. The grapes are grown in the esteemed position of Venje and treated only with ecological agents, while the vinification is done in a traditional way, using natural yeasts. After the fermentation, the wine is left to ripen for 12 months in wooden barrels and then bottled without filtering. This serious wine with an intense aroma of berries, the result of a spontaneous fermentation on its own yeasts and high sugars, a little to rather tannic, is best paired with strong deer, pork or beef meat.

In the second esteemed vineyard position of Kutjevo vineyards, Vinkomir, Sontacchi family grows Pinot Noir, from which it produces a soft and rounded wine with aromas of raspberry and floral notes, as well as velvety tannins with hints of minerality, using the traditional method of sinking the grape skins in open containers. It is recommended to serve it at lower temperatures than the ones usual for red wines because this showcases its freshness, and the wine seems better balanced. Served with a similar selection of dishes as with Kitokret, Sontacchi Pinot Noir is a fine match with light veal and fish, such as tuna or salmon.

Along with monovarietal Graševina, when it comes to white wines, Sontacchi family has also produced an unusual blend of seven varieties named Superslav, produced in very limited quantities. It is an experiment which, together with Graševina, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminac, and Muscat Yellow, also includes the Serbian hybrid Morava. This may be considered a winemakers’ ode, dedicated to white varieties of the region, the berries of which are macerated for 90 days.

Back in 1900, Tomaso Sontacchi started to cultivate vines on Vinkomir, Baron Turković’s estate in Kutjevo. The tradition has continued throughout the last century and today, father Hrvoje and his sons Krunoslav and Antun Sontacchi are the fifth generation of winemakers who grow Graševina, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir (in cooperation with contract farmers), on 2.5 hectares in the positions of Venje and Vidim. Their state-of-the-art cellar with the capacity of 40,000 litres includes the largest stone wine bottle in the world. Along with the tasting room, the family also manages their family farm, and they offer their guests an accommodation with a wellness centre.
