Medea Winery

Istra.

One of the largest Istrian wineries has divided its labels into two lines. The base line of the Medea wines is made of Istrian Malvasia and Chardonnay among white wines, Merlot, Teran and Cabernet Sauvignon among red wines, and one Rosé. In the premium line, they produce premium Merlot and Istrian Malvasia from specific Punta Greca and Montiron localities. In special years they also produce the Medea Brut sparkling wine by the Charmat Method, and beside the viticulture, they are engaged in the production of olive oil.

Grapes for Montiron Malvasia come from vineyards almost 40 years old and are the basis for the best Medea wine of the yellow-greenish colour with crystal reflections. A smaller part of the wine is fermented in wood, and a larger part in stainless steel, after which it is mixed and kept in its own yeast for 4 months. Elegant wine with emphasised freshness due to fine acids and aromas typical for Malvasia, like lemon and grapefruit. The distinct odours of plant and floral notes, in particular of dry grass and hay, and of the flowers of acacia are rounded at the end with tobacco and tea aromas. Several award-winning Malvasia Montiron at the Decanter World Wine Awards is an ideal match with light appetizers, salads, white fish and shellfish.

Punta Greca is another special locality because it is the southernmost Istrian vineyard in the sandy soil that retains water exceptionally well because the Istrian red soil is mixed with clay. On this unique location, on approximately 3.5 hectares, they grow Merlot, which gives one of the best wines of this variety in Croatia. Actually, Merlot has proved to perfectly withstand high temperatures and lack of rain in this part of Istria, while bora and sirocco, and all-day sunshine give it a special touch. Punta Greca is produced in limited quantities (8043 bottles of the 2015 vintage, while the 2016 vintage is still ageing) only in years when the harvest is of high quality and it is aged in barriques for up to two years. Granite-red cherry colour also dominates in both the scent and the taste and suggests that it is a wine that is the best companion of beef dishes, goulash and stews as well as steaks and strong cheese types.

The base line of the wines is named after the Greek sorceress Medea, the granddaughter of the God of Sun Helios and niece of Circe, as is the Winery itself, and contains six style-different wines, which makes the options for their pairing with different foodstuffs almost limitless. Young oenologists have decided to make each of the six wines pleasant and highly drinkable with emphasis on varietal characteristics. Wines are recommended to be drunk young while they are still fresh, and they can accompany all the dishes so they are a frequent guest in wine lists of restaurants throughout Croatia.

Description:

On more than 60 hectares of vineyards between Pula and Medulin, the Medea Winery grows 5 varieties, mostly Istrian Malvasia and Merlot, and to a lesser degree Teran, Cabernet Sauvignon, Refosco and Chardonnay. Temperate Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and an average of 2,400 hours of sunshine, with superb grapes from the Istrian soil and a modern cellar with the capacity of around 400,000 litres along with young but already experienced winemakers are the equally important parts of this successful wine story. A few years ago they replaced the cork stoppers with screw caps, thereby lowering the production costs and making the wines significantly more affordable to the general consumers with the same level of quality.
