Restaurant & Pansion Učka

Although it belongs to a "maritime" district, the peak of Poklon is 930 meters above sea level, will gently beckon you through the ancient forest to the slopes of Učka. But when you arrive at the chalet and the entrance to the Učka Nature Park, cast your glance to the wonderful Kvarner Gulf, take a deep breath of fresh air, and prepare yourself for the brutal enjoyment of the Pansion Učka, to which we endearingly have given the name – the house of goulash.

But the Pansion Učka, 20 minutes from Matulji and half an hour from Rijeka, is much more than that. It is a place where hunters and hikers gather, but it is increasingly frequented by guests who know the menu that is waiting for them includes specialties from wild game accompanied by creative side dishes based on local recipes.

The story of this restaurant on the mountain has lasted for two years, when two Opatija residents moved to Učka and started from scratch. Guided by a courageous idea, they soon understood that the mountain provided everything that they needed. Today, with the smell of burning logs in the stove and the aroma of homemade rakijas, we have a smiling couple who are ready to explain each dish in the finest detail, and at the same time, serve outstanding wine.

The bear meat comes from Gorski Kotar, everything else comes from the island of Cres. Every cut of meat is checked several times. The restaurant offers at least four types of goulash everyday: venison, bear, Istrian beef and veal.

Nothing is breaded and there are no french fries. Everything is served hunter style! As a starter, there is a soup of pheasant and other poultry, as well as a classic beef soup. And you should know that all of the pasta, gnocchi, bread and desserts are made in-house.

The greetings from the kitchen come in the form of paté of wild boar, followed by bear goulash cooked with a fig jam and with homemade gnocchi and dried cherries reduced in a house wine. The secret lies in the slow cooking with a love aspiring to tenderness, and the result is pure love on the plate. What follows is a goulash of venison and veal that is more tender and simpler, and without either a note of sweetness or a very dark color. While the bear goulash is for grownups, we chose fuži (an Istrian pasta) for the youngsters, both are marvelous. There is also white palenta as a side dish.

The cabbage is braised in boar fat and sometimes can also have čvarke made from bear fat. Other specialties include filet of venison or bear. Which of these meats is prepared depends on what arrives on the mountain. Australians, Italians, Belgians and people from Zagreb frequently come to Učka for the weekend, so a reservation is required on those days. While free jazz is being played, we enjoy the rich beer and wines list – Cabernet Patrika Sirotića is the outstanding house wine – and there is also a malvazija from the same producer.

At the end, there are the homemade pastries: crepes, brownies and, when in season, pumpkin cake.
But we would only like just one more serving of the goulash.
The beautiful nature and view, a house from Heidi and Pinocchio together, amazing delicacies on your spoon. You simply have to visit the Pansion Učka. The warmest recommendation!
