In the heart of Croatia, in the always refreshing Delnice the beautiful hotel Risnjak has been operating for many years, of which the Goranska kuća restaurant is an integral part. A small, beautiful room full of sweet scenes from the mountain past, photographs, artefacts and dried herbs like zucchini, flowers, sunflowers ... Love at first sight, wonderful details, and warmth in the midst of harsh mountain climate in a nearly hundred year old house.
For starters, the more-than-friendly staff instructs you that this is an a la carte restaurant where you can really get everything for everyone, but that they also put a special emphasis on what they are surrounded with in abundance - forest fruits and game dishes. As the climate here is too harsh to grow grapes, homemade liqueurs, both from mountain grasses and sweet blueberries, are offered for starters.
Goranska kuća is essentially a wonderful haven for game lovers. Surrounded by mountains and forests, as well as numerous hunting societies and agricultural businesses in the vicinity of Delnice and Gorski Kotar, the restaurant is at all times richly stocked with the freshest ingredients, so the specialties are steaks and schnitzels with various sauces. Game goulashes are also on the daily menu, but what stuck with us is the roe deer, hunting boar in beer, and deer with mussels and green pepper. Of course, there are also classic meats like turkey in meringue sauce, beef fillet in blueberry sauce, as well as many vegetarian specialties, because people here collect penny buns and chanterelles, as well as whatever nature provides them with, depending on the season.
Most of all, frogs in beer dough and snails with polenta and mushrooms tickle the palate, but we had to try a handful of home-made prosciutto and salami made of deer, bears and other game, as well as cheese from the highest inhabited place in Croatia, Beg's Valley. As part of the plate we also received a glass of Žlahtina PZ Vrbnik from Krk, the nearest island to this part of Croatia where, unfortunately, there are no vineyards. The great news for salami and bacon lovers is that you will enjoy every bite of local produce.
Deer thighs in hunting sauce and roe deer in apple sauce came as the main courses. Although the hunter's sauce is interesting, too, the grilled apple base fit perfectly with the soft roasted meat with homemade gnocchi and croquettes. Truth be told, this dish is admirable because it pulled a really great story out of this plate with its simplicity and minimal number of ingredients. The black pinot of the Vrbanek vineyard in Vivodina perfectly completed the magnificent meal, with its pronounced freshness, fruitiness and cherry aroma. A superb pleasure, a great blend of fruit and game - one for the culinary textbooks!
It should be noted that they make their own bread at Goranska kuća, mixed in hands and baked in large round pieces, juicy, moist and irresistible. In the end, you will be additionally warned not to miss the blueberry strudel, for which a great number of turns towards the restaurant off the nearby highway has been made for years. Small black forest blueberries and a thick sauce for the real fruitcake lovers.
Goranska kuća is a gathering place for walkers, hikers, hunters ... The hotel and restaurant are pet-friendly, the staff is polite and courteous, the small details in the interior will take you back to some beautiful old times, and the roe deer in apple sauce is really worth at least one visit. For lovers of forest and nature, two thumbs up for the Mountain House!
