Soil, the sea, wind, the sun. We have Istria to thank for this healthy gift of nature that has become an integral ingredient in our kitchens. That’s right, olive oil.
Ol Istria is the largest olive oil producer in Croatia with more than 220 hectares of olive groves. Their olive groves contain 65,000 olive trees that produce around 1,400,000 kg of olive oil per year. The groves are planted with indigenous varieties (Istrian Buža and Bjelica) and partly with varieties from northern Italy (Leccino, Pendolino, Ascolana and Picholine) Leccino is the most common variety accounting for approximately 80%, whereas the remainder is composed of Pendolino, Picholine and Ascolana. It’s worth mentioning that some of the varieties are more than 40 years old.
As part its brand Ol Istria launches single varietal olive oil Picholine which is made from a variety originating from southern France. This is a very piquant oil with a pronounced bitter note. Ol Istria went to great lengths so that several types of this divine olive oil starting with mild Pendolino, fruity Ascolana, Leccino and to very intense Picholino and Istrian Bjelica reach the end consumer. Aside from single varietal oils, their brand also encompasses a Leccino-based coupage extra virgin olive oil. This oil’s freshness and mild taste make it irreplaceable when preparing all kinds of dishes.
Ol Istria extra virgin olive oil is the golden-green jewel of Istrian olive growing. It has won the gold medal at London IOOC 2016, an international extra virgin olive oil competition. This award-winning oil rich in nutrients and aromatic notes is characterised by balanced piquancy and bitterness, a pleasant scent, golden to yellow colour and exceptional thickness. Oil is cold-pressed with the share of free oleic acids ranging from 0.08 to 0.2 per cent.
