“When I started working here, I ate two every day”, whispered the waitress, bringing the ordered dark chocolate cake with caramel, which rounded off an exceptionally pleasant lunch in the tiny Zagreb restaurant Lari & Penati at the bottom of Petrinjska Ulica.

Lunch had begun with an excellent pie of garden asparagus and a goat’s cheese garnish which looked a lot, but in reality just right, and a green salad and rocket, and continued with wonderful sweet-salty roast pork ribs with a potato salad and red and white cabbage. The ribs were slow cooked and were very tender. If they were any tenderer, you could have eaten the bones as well. Their special flavour was given by the coating whose ingredients, at least those that were easily recognisable, were cinnamon and chocolate. The others were the chef’s secret, and there are about 40 of them supposedly.

The Lares are household deities from Roman mythology, whilst the Penates deities of the family, joy and prosperity. In this little place that bears their names it really feels like you are in a home where ten members of a family live. Hardly more than that many guests can eat at the same time in the area nicely and shabbily laid out, as though a dozen people had designed it. The front windows are decorated with hanging trainers, the walls have old enamelled stew pots which are difficult to call pots because they are mainly shallow.

The tables are for two, but they can be put together for larger groups. The little counter is filled with classically shaped glasses for wine and blue, slightly psychedelic, ones for water.

The choice of wines is partially visible through the glass counter, and in the window, therefore noticeable from the street, they prominently advertise a good and costly wine producer and a slightly more decent fine one, although more expensive. Other wines are upon request, though it is easy to make an arrangement. They are mainly ordered by the glass, and they also have several half-bottles, which is very pleasant amount for a quick lunch for two.

The menu obviously often changes frequently because it is written on one page placed on a wooden clipboard.
In short, a pleasant place for a quick and tasty, not too pricey meal.

Restaurant description:

The choice at the Lari & Penati Bistro consists of mainly delicatessen surprises and is quite refreshing for the Zagreb restaurant scene.
The restaurant serves hearty vegetable soups, gourmet sandwiches and snacks, tasty spreads and imaginative pies of, for example, leek, goat’s cheese and pancetta. There is also whole range of fish dishes or chicken wings marinated in honey, ginger and orange juice. The menu changes on a daily basis and the price is very affordable.
You can round off the gastronomic adventure with drinking top red and white wines or natural fruit juices of elder or mint.
