Fresh cow’s milk cheese with chives served in a beautiful glass on a stand with breadsticks, which serves as cutlery for the meal, is a simple, yet delicious half of the welcome to guests to the Štanger Restaurant in Lovran. In a larger glass on the stand is Malvasia as the second half of the welcome with which the guest chooses from menu of with a relatively small selection of well thought out dishes.
The fish soup was fine, with lots of meat, several shellfish and the occasional shrimp tail, and the scallops in goose liver sauce were very tasty. The shellfish meat was firm, the pieces of liver delicious, sweet and fragrant, the Roman gnocchi juicy and coloured by the cuttlefish ink, whilst the sauce that liver left on the butter was lightly thickened by the cream.
In the search for a more fitting wine for this dish of diverse, but well combined savoury-sweet tastes, the waitress immediately said how some drink a sweeter Muscat and that they were very satisfied. And it really wasn’t a bad combination. Despite the slim body of the bottle it suited very well. It would be better for some fuller, if possible slightly noble rot. However, the search of a predicate wine for this warm summer evening would be, honestly, too much to ask.
Such a delicate Muscat also accompanied well the light dessert of warm forest fruits with ice cream and vanilla.
They have a seasonal fish menu with three courses, which depend on the daily offer of fish and a permanent fish taster menu, which is a hundred kunas cheaper than if the dish was ordered separately.
The wine list is rich and quite varied, and 12 of the wines can also be ordered by the glass.
The restaurant is on the road that connects Lovran and Mošćenička Draga, however from the little terrace behind the restaurant there is a delightful view of the Kvarner Bay. They work from 6 pm, and they could have better custom during the day, because it is right by the sea.
