Located in the heart of Volosko, with a view to Rijeka and the Kvarner Gulf, Plavi Podrum has had a reputation for many years as a place that true gourmets should visit once in their lifetime. Although it has brilliant moments for meat (steak, pepper steak with button mushrooms, pork ombolo covered with prosciutto), Plavi podrum is primarily a fish restaurant, skillfully led by our celebrated sommelier Danijela Kramarić and her husband Damir.

Situated on the riva, protected from the wind, and with a small terrace, Podrum also has a glass-enclosed interior and one other area with soft music and indescribable shelves of wine that make a good introduction to a conversation and new acquaintances. The seasonal house wine that the more than pleasant staff recommends is the champion of Vinistra, Fakin malvazija, which is a terrific preamble to a timeless gastro experience.

The biggest problem with Plavi Podrum is deciding how to start the meal. Both the warm and cold appetizers are so fresh, interesting, innovative and creative that it is impossibly difficult to make it to the main course without being full. In addition to fish soup and manestra with octopus, you can have fresh, net-caught Kvarner scampi in a variety of ways – raw and just touched with pepper and sprinkled with Ipša olive oil, on risotto, in soup, etc. Do not miss the marinated sardines with raisins and the beautiful soft and hearty homemade bread.

We should especially note the triple-cooked soup that is incredibly strong given its clarity. Every type of shrimp, shellfish, octopus, mussels and cuttlefish are found here in some proportion, and this masterwork brings complete enjoyment, clearly, if you are a lover of the sea. Buzare, homemade noodles and risotto continue the series of brilliant appetizers. We heartily recommend the warm shrimp on overfried Pag cheese – the texture of the cheese prepared in this way is transformed into something like goose liver! If you like scampi, they are also on the menu, including roasted on the grill.

Now that we have eaten this at Plavi Podrum the world can end! There are all types of fish, depending on the season, the month, and spawning. Great care is taken in every detail in the selection of angler fish, hake, and the noble fishes, and there is a breathtaking array of olive oils, as many types as there are ice creams in August at the seaside. Gran teran Coronica is recommended for heavier meals.

If you love short drinks, rakijas, whiskeys, cognacs – you are in the right place, and you will be surprised by the very brave selection of specialty beers and gins that you can spice up yourself. Bravo.

In short, when you are at the sea, enjoy its fruits. Plavi podrum is the perfect place for it!
