On one of the hills above the Rijeka coast, where once stood the legendary restaurant Ivica and Marica, the story of the Na Sušaku inn has been lasting for 14 years. They started with grill, made a fabulous minced meat mixture, and, over time, started spreading the word about their story and their offer. For years, care has been taken to ensure that each plate is personalised and every signle guest was treated with care. The terrace is cozy, embedded in wood with a view of the park, and the interior more intimate than elitist: but plenty come here to eat for more than an affordable price. And if you overdo it, can you spend the night in their apartments …
Sušak is a place where there is no fish or pizza, but with a couple of vegetarian dishes, everything is mostly devoted to meat and meat dishes. The ingredients are treated with great care and attention to detail, so that each piece of meat is guaranteed to possess freshness and origin. The emphasis has lately been placed on steaks, but the more-than-pleasant staff are stressing the importance of making their own pasta, ravioli, croquettes, sorrel, gnocchi... Also, great home-made bread is baked at the place every morning.
The Istrian pljukanci a la pastorala arrived as a warm appetizer, and even though the menu also holds prosciutto, cheese, as well as tartar steak, we were intrigued by the name of this traditional delicacy. The magnificent, hard pljukanci in a powerful meat sauce come in an abundant portion, and the scents and aromas are further accentuated with the accompaniment of Radovan Malvazija 2018 white wine - a masterpiece of a famous winemaker from the neighbouring Istria. An excellent combination of fresh and floral Malvasia and a sauce combination of meat, onion and Mediterranean spices are served in an ideal ratio.
One of the benefits of this restaurant is that they use their own vegetables provided for by their own company. The staff will tell you the exact name and place where each and every piece of meat is procured for every steak, which, of course, is exclusively the best from all over Croatia, from Slavonia through the local Grobnik, while, for example, horse meat comes from Karlovac. We note the latter because our intuition - in addition to specialties such as the sirloin and beef steaks, pork loins or veal chops - somehow led us to a foal steak in honey, pepperoni and garlic sauce. This brilliant, soft, juicy, and perfectly spicy dish is served with another pearl - the Radovan Merlot 2015. With the wonderful aroma of blackberry, this is a thick and strong wine perfectly paired with an extraordinary piece of meat. We haven't enjoyed this type of meat in a long time - this just might be the best location in Croatia for foal.
Marenda is served here every day, so count on encountering some Croatian classics in the morning, and we definitely recommend you thoroughly try the cakes made by the wife of the owner. The interesting thing is that they are mostly gluten-free and come in all colors and shapes, with at least five different pieces each day, so today we first tried the forest fruit cake with cheese - refreshing, sour, and gentle... But then came the huge energy bomb that is the Sušak cake, with nuts, Nutella, and lots of chocolate. What a finale!
Sušak is a place where you will come to eat a lot and eat well. It is not an oasis of miniature snacks and finger foods with designer candlesticks, but a simple and honest meat oasis where you can make the most of your lost calories by enjoying the finest food prepared in a great way. If you love the traditional, old-fashioned taste of goulash, all the way through pasta and to fantastic barbecue - and especially horse meat - you will often come back to the neighbourhood of the famous Rijeka skyscraper. Superb meat and great wines - hats off!
