Kornat

Close to the beautiful sea organ and the centre of the town, with a view of the Zadar Bay, lies an unassuming and peaceful but very special restaurant Kornat. Its modern interior design features many paintings, an upright piano, and Dalmatian songs coming from the radio, which immediately urges you to have a glass of red wine. We therefore warmly recommend starting a pleasant fish meal with a glass of red Korlat Syrah wine.

Kornat is constantly among top Croatian restaurants but is different from the rest as its prices are more affordable and the atmosphere is much warmer. The menu opens with a George Bernard Shaw quotation: "There is no sincerer love than the love of food", which is an excellent introduction to what comes next – although tiny, tuna pâté speaks all the languages of all the seas in the world. A terrific beginning.

When there is only a street between you and the sea it is only natural to order a fish soup. And we are talking art here. The soup is thick, compact, full, made of the freshest ingredients that arrived that day, mostly grouper and dentex. It is just a right amount of fat, golden-yellow, with just enough rice and plenty of beautiful, aromatic, local parsley. Like a sun with green freckles, perfection. "Play of the day", perhaps the best in Croatia, until we are proven otherwise.

The restaurant’s extremely pleasant staff (older generation, these are the best!) recommend shellfish with pasta. Pasta is exquisite, "al dente" and everything tastes so nice, gentle, and soft. Shellfish, the warty venus – top notch.
At Kornati, as the name implies, evoking the homonymous islands, there are plenty fish and some meat specialities but we definitely recommend a selection of shellfish and desserts. We tasted two of these delicacies.

The chocolate cake was soft, creamy, very tasty, not too bitter, as was the panna cotta - lovely, berries were delicious, not too sweet and we topped it all off with homemade cherry brandy. Too bad we visited Kornat at 5 pm when everything was peaceful and quiet because this location is worth visiting in the evening when you can take a seat at a table with a view of the street and the sea. A full Mediterranean experience to enjoy.

Restaurant description:

From the first day when we opened Kornat, we opened the doors to our home, say the owners. And they wish for their guests to feel like this – at home. A home where they welcome and say goodbye to all with the best they can offer – love for food and joy of living, satisfaction, character, charm, and best wines. With a view of boats coming in and leaving the port, view of a spectacular sunset, of the sea, either calm or wavy due to Tramontana or Bora winds. In this modern hectic way of life, stop for a moment and take a ride on the waves of the scents and tastes of the Mediterranean.
