Welcome to Hrvatsko Zagorje, to Klet Kozjak where on top of a hill you get to experience this beautiful part of Croatia and enjoy the best of what this region has to offer. Klet itself is large and was built using several kinds of materials. Even though brick and wood predominate, you have concrete and glass as well. The most beautiful part of definitely the huge terrace with picturesque gazebos, wooden accessories and a general vibe of going back to the past and splendid days of yore.

The restaurant’s philosophy is rather straightforward: here you’ll eat plenty of homemade food and as if you’ve come to your Zagorje hosts’ house. Forget about fine dining and small portions at Klet Kozjak. You’ll get plenty of food here. It would be best for your large crowd to order several large dishes so that everyone gets to try a bit of everything. Much like the locals would do.

Colourful nature in the spring, fresh green colour of the forest and meadows alternate with the stunning sky and delicacies in plates. Given that the menu is based exclusively on local Zagorje specialties we recommend you start with ample platters, namely the one containing assorted cheese and cured meat. The location of today’s restaurant used to be a place where goats were reared and the restaurant owes its name to this fact so all cheeses are just fantastic, fresh, local, fragrant and aromatic. Home-reared Black pig bacon and capocollo are full of quality homemade fat so they might impede the remainder of your meal. That’s why you may want to opt for the garlic soup. This simple yet phenomenal dish is served in a traditional pot thereby giving you an extra retro vibe. We had a coupage of Graševina (Welschriesling), Sauvignon and Riesling with the appetizer and this is a wine they make themselves. As the waiter warned us – locals drink wine with carbonated water so you might as well learn its traditional name – gemišt!

As far as main dishes are concerned, the selection is concentrated on regional specialties so we should single out Zagorje steak, tenderloin kozjak and Sveti Križ raca (duck). Classic meat specialties with homemade twist provided by the kitchen team. Grilled platters are a special delight because they’re rich, large and full of surprises such as duck breast or foal meat in sauce (Sveti Križ platter). We bumped into roasted goat kid with mlinci (a thin dried flatbread that is easy to prepare by simply pouring boiled salted water or soup over), delicious and aromatic meat and phenomenal lamb’s lettuce. We didn’t get to try the menu specialty, which is Lecek’s pasta with mushrooms, bacon and asparagus. But you always have to leave something for a second visit.

Finally, you have baked štrukli, both classic ones and in honey liqueur, apple and sour cherry strudel, several types of crepes, which is ideal with their very own Gewürztraminer. The phenomenal sizzling hot sour cherry strudel is served with vanilla ice cream as the perfect opponent, a truly wonderful combination of sour and sweet and warm and cold.
