Ogulin, a beautiful city in the central part of Croatia, will immediately win your affection with its freshness, colours and stories. After all, this is the city where Ivana Brlić Mažuranić, Croatia’s best known female writer, came from. After doing some sightseeing and taking a stroll in the fresh air, you’ll definitely be up for a wide selection of local specialties. You’re in luck because you’ll find them all in one place if you go to the eponymous restaurant of hotel Frankopan.
Platter “Divlji pladanj Frankopan” is definitely something that’ll catch your attention straightaway. The platter includes deer prosciutto, game meat sausages and several types of cheese. When it comes to cheese, we just have to single out this region’s recognisable product – Škripavac cheese. You can also try fried Škripavac cheese served with tartar sauce. This phenomenal and tender specialty is obtained from the nearby Miščević cheese dairy in Josipdol and is truly remarkable when paired with aromatic Žlahtina from Vrbnik.
If you’re in the mood for soup, they have a really diverse soup selection. Particular attention should be paid to the homemade mushroom soup, as well as the rich Lika soup with potatoes, bacon, onions and sour cream, but we recommend you try the latter in winter. The restaurant’s specialties include Ogulin-style veal, beef steak in caper sauce and duck breast in a mystic sauce, but opted for a local specialty - deer goulash with gnocchi. This delicious, juicy piece of meat has been excellently marinated with lots of pronounced wild herb aromas, which make an inseparable whole in combination with Babić from Šibenik. We had to skip the venison medallions with sour cherries and leave them for another occasion. The wine list includes about thirty labels from around Croatia. Given that not particularly a wine-producing region, the pleasant staff pairs the meals with wines they believe would go great with the ordered food. And they’re doing a really good job.
Since you’ve become a part of this mountainous region’s mood boosted by the scents of the surrounding forests, you might as well treat yourself with Frankopan’s pride and joy and that would be 50 types of crepes. Sweet crepes, salty, baked ones, stuffed with fruit or chocolate. They’re so good that our recommendations wouldn’t do them justice. We opted for crepes Frankopan with hazelnuts, chocolate, whipped cream and ice cream. We’re not sure whether the dukes Frankopan used to indulge themselves like this in the past, but everything here is tasty and lavish.
If you’re just passing by or you simply prefer the mountains to being on a beach, restaurant Frankopan has exactly what you need, great food, peace and an ideal way to recharge your batteries drained by work. The highland region of Croatia awaits you, give it a try!
