Not a lot of Croatian or world restaurants can offer the medieval feel of a 13th-century castle and modern cuisine with a sharp eye for details. But that’s exactly what Kastel, a foodies’ sanctuary located in Old City Dubovac in Karlovac, managed to pull off. Stone walls are surrounded by a forest that this area was named after. Aside from lush green vegetation, it also offers a magnificent view of the city on four rivers and a short walking trail.

Having climbed up the stone stairs to a spacious terrace and walked in the warm interior with wooden benches and furniture, residents of Karlovac, locals or visitors traveling from continental Croatia to the coast will definitely make a stop to enjoy the menu. The menu includes both Mediterranean and continental cuisine, while the dishes are modified according to the season. Pljukanci with prawns and asparagus are a representative of Mediterranean cuisine. This curiously shaped pasta is made exactly as it has been made for generations by our grandmothers in Istria and Kvarner. Today this staple food of the poor is a common sight on plates during celebrations and festivities. It’s shaped by rubbing dough in the palms of your hands and boiled for a short while so that it’s hard enough to feel it under your teeth yet soft enough to be combined with all sorts of sauces. According to house recommendation, it’s served with Cabernet Sauvignon produced by winery Iuris, which is located in the Erdut wine growing region in eastern Croatia. Seductive elderberry dances on your taste buds and playfully merges with light summer dishes.

Full-bodied wines go great with the house specialty, pork ribs baked for eight hours and served with potatoes, salad and tender sauce. You just have to touch the meat with a fork for it to fall off the bone. It melts in the mouth and every bite is a testimony to the chef’s skills. We shouldn’t forget about desserts. A nice chocolate cake with wild berry topping, cheesecake or refreshing panna cotta with fresh strawberries and aromatic mint make a fantastic choice for all those with a penchant for sweet. They are so tasty that coming to Kastel just for dessert and a cup of coffee is worth the effort.
