The fertile Dalmatian land, the Bura wind, love of the land and hardworking hands of the olive growers have contributed to the development of the production of superb olive oils in the Dalmatian region.
The people of Brač tell an interesting tale of the origins of olive cultivation. They say that the famous Trojan warrior Antenor sailed to the island that, according to his until then Greek town of Ambrachia, he called Brachia (Brač). With him he also brought the winegrower Silenus, who according to the legend, planted young olive trees on the island of Brač. On the poor Brač land the olive found fertile soil and has brought life to generations of islanders.
Uje is the first Croatian oil shop launched with the mission of promoting top Croatian olive oils, and in the last few years it has grown into the central point of the offer of the best Croatian olive oils and delicacies.
They have famous brands of olive oil such as: Uje Selection, Aroma Mediterranea and Brachia. The most famous is, however, Brachia, which boasts many awards, first of all those for the design of its packaging. It is most proud of its WorldStar design award from 2006, when the Brachia ceramic bottle became the best packaging in the world in the food category.
The Brachia range has several different products. First, is the range of olive oils simply named – Brachia. There are also Brachia Premium and Eko Brachia obtained by a process in a certificated plant from organically grown Brač olives. The Brachia variety of oil consists of indigenous varieties of olive oil: Levantinka, Drobnica, Oblica, Lastovka, Buharica. The last in the series is a Brachia olive oil flavoured with lemon, sage, garlic, chilli, mint, oregano, rosemary and basil.
The little bottles in which this divine golden “juice” is packaged are certainly remarkable, so many also buy them as a souvenir.
If you would like to enjoy olive oil and specialities which are connected in one way or another with them, then we thoroughly recommend you visit the Uje “oil bar” which with its accompanying wine bar, lounge and Pikulece snack-bar make up a unique gastronomic package in the very heart of Split. The trained staff will present olive oils and wines, and you can try some of the traditional Dalmatian specialities prepared, of course, in olive oil.
