Kalazić Winery

Slavko Kalazić produced its first wines in 2007. They were nine types of varietal wines. A specific is that even seven of those nine wines of the 2007 vintage got the “prime” category even before they were released in the market. Those were extract wines with exceptionally high alcohols, and they are still in top form even today. Over time, wines became smoother and found their way to the general consumers, winning more than a hundred awards in different wine competitions.

Decanter silver winning Graševina from the 2016 vintage has fuller body, it is creamy on the palate and has distinguished varietal properties: vineyard growing peaches, green apples and ripe tropical fruit are felt on the nose, along with mild minerality in the mouth of long ending with pleasant bitterness. A year older vintage (bronze winning) wine has preserved freshness with emphasised citrus aromas of dry orange peel and lemon. The typical Baranja wine is best paired with Baranja’s river fish specialties.

Another Decanter silver was won by semi-dry 2016 Riesling. Floral elegance on the nose, with unavoidable petroleum and ripe nectarines on the palate complete the character of this true, ripe Rhine Riesling which is interesting to consume with spicy homemade sausages.

Among other white labels, the selected berry harvest of 2008 Graševina and the 2017 Traminac distinguish themselves. The selected Graševina, unlike the base one, is dense alike fruit juice and is dominated with pear and quince. Rich honey aromas of the locust-tree and meadow flowers are felt on the nose, and the ending is pleasantly bitter even piquant and long-lasting. The freshness of still high acids pairs perfectly with its sweetness showing clearly that the wine will be enjoyable and very palatable for a long while. With its Traminac wines, the Kalazić Winery proves that Baranja is an exceptional terroir for the production of that variety, and only two years later, IBB instigates delight with its combination of rich aromas of flowers, citrus and honey. Having a full body, and being aromatic and strong, it leaves sweetish taste in the mouth long afterwards so it matches well cheese and cheesecakes.

Among the wide range of red wines, Cabernet Sauvignon wines are most attractive, in particular the 2008 late vintage, which boasts concentrated fruit aromas of dried fruit. Semi-sweet, of a full body and with rounded and mature tannins, it is paired perfectly with desserts with dark chocolate.

Owing to the wide range of base wines, the Kalazić Winery also boasts two blends. The very complex and harmonious white Batina cuvée blanc (Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc) surprises with the richness of aroma on both the nose and the palate, and red Batina cuvée rouge (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah) is more of traditional, though lively and juicy, with fine aromas of oak and spices.

The first vines of the Kalazić Winery were planted before 2004 on Banovo brdo – Banska kosa, a hillocky location to the northeast of Baranja between Zmajevac and Batina, in the immediate proximity of the Danube. More than 120,000 vines were planted (eco-growing started in 2010) on 18 hectares of loess soil. The varieties are the following: Graševina, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminac, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay among white varieties, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Frankovka among black varieties. All of them grow perfectly owing to the single microclimate conditions, and their way to the bottle leads through a modernly equipped cellar, using the state-of-the-art technologies in wine production.
