The family-owned Buhač winery is located in Vukovar-Srijem county's bountiful plain, with the most vineyards on the localities of Liska, next to Ilok. Father and son, two wine knights, started the production in 1998, putting a lot of work and effort into it in the years after the war.
Growing in the hot Slavonian sun with some rain on approximately 27 hectares of land, 20 of which is family-owned, the white grapes Graševina, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer take up about 16 hectares, and the red grapes, Blaufränkisch, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, take up a little under 4 hectares, and Prof. Vlado Kovač, Ph.D., an enologist, keeps a close eye on everything. Since the beginning, the winery has been using controlled fermentation of grape must and all the red wines mature in oak barrels.
With the father, Ivan, and son, Domagoj, the love for wine is visible in every step. This is a family, building their story, not hoping to get rich, but instead putting all their efforts and money into winning over people who drink wine with not only their mouth, but their soul.
Buhač family is established in the wine scene as a reliable winemaker that offers probably the best ratio of price versus quality in terms of Croatian wines. Great positions of the vineyards, quality of the raw material and great enological skills result in wines that are in demand after the first try. Buhač wines reveal, without question, the characteristics of the wine-growing region of Srijem.
Presently, the production capacity is about 230 000 litres and the men of this winery do not wish to expand for now because, as we pointed out before, they wish to win over the hearts of their consumers with their flavours first, with already proven results on the market.
The predominant Graševina is one of the most popular wine grapes on the market, and Buhač Graševina is drinkable, citrus flavoured and surprisingly light for this climate, just what the modern market expects from a white wine that can be served with various dishes.
The standout among aromatic wines is the Gewürztraminer, which has a hay-like yellow colour, it is very aromatic (which is desirable with this kind) and predictably sweet, which makes it ideal for pairing with a number of desserts at the end of the meal. It is also perfect for girls' nights, so it can be served as a “girly” wine for such occasions because a lot of women truly do like to have a glass of sweeter wine.
As for the red wines, Buhač family is especially proud of their Merlot, which is aromatic and has a rich, soft, fuller-bodied flavour. The aroma feels like cocoa, coffee and chocolate. As such, it pairs well with grill dishes, and because it is so full-bodied, it also goes well with some desserts.
Buhač wines are certainly a true example of a perfect blend of taste and price!
